Earth Day Lessons Blossomed in Glassboro Schools


Earth Day lessons blossomed in Glassboro Schools this year thanks to a combination of nature and technology. Students and teachers collaborated on projects that helped everyone learn more about how to take care of our earth. Children also discovered the emotional benefits of connecting with nature.


J. Harvey Rodgers School prekindergarten teachers recorded and shared activities using Screencastify. Parent proudly showed pictures of their children with their completed assignments. Students mixed food coloring and shaving cream to paint a circular picture of the earth. The youngsters also planted seeds that they pulled out of tomatoes or other vegetables that they had on hand. Teacher Barb Fortini’s class followed up on their read aloud story, “The Alphabet Tree,” by drawing a tree and cutting and pasting leaf shapes with letters on them. The project let the students practice letter identification and sounds.


Dorothy L. Bullock School first- through third-graders learned that caring for our community and planet should be celebrated every day. Children worked on a variety of assignments for their regular, world cultures and gifted and talented classes.


“Bullock hosted a virtual Show and Tell via Flipgrid. Students were able to record themselves and share the different ways they are caring for their environment. Some students repurposed items around their home by creating reusable bags out of unwanted t-shirts and upcycled old plastic bottles to make new toys. One student created a desk organizer out of an egg carton.  Some students planted a garden, while others took pictures of themselves recycling and making better choices for the environment,” said world cultures teacher Aileen Castro.


Castro’s Dorothy L. Bullock School International Club students are leading an ongoing campaign to increase public awareness of the plight of endangered animals.


At Thomas E. Bowe School, fourth-grade teacher Shannon Killelea and Rowan University student teacher Saadiqa Smart asked students to create Flipgrid videos about something they’ve grown to appreciate more in nature during this shutdown. Student videos highlighted flowers, plants, and animals. Killelea invited Principal Craig Stephenson and special area teachers to participate. She also asked each student to take and share a photo of something in nature. Killelea and Smart created a google slideshow of the photos to take students on a Virtual Nature Walk. As part of their SEL (Social Emotional Learning) instruction, they noted the powerful emotional benefits of getting outside and enjoying nature. They pointed out that the sights of nature can bring people from blue, yellow and red (sad, anxious, and angry) zones to the green (happy) zone.


Seventh-graders at Glassboro Intermediate School created posters at home using recycled materials. GIS Green Team coordinator and teacher Lisa Montana shared pictures of some of the students’ work on the school's Green Team Instagram, @gisgreenproject.


The creativity of staff and students alike enabled students to share and explore nature in diverse and interesting ways.
