    Dear Parents,

Hello!  My name is Mrs. Shirley and I will be your child’s second grade teacher this year. I am beyond excited to have joined the Bullock family last year! We are going to have an exciting year ahead and I look forward to having you be a part of it every step of the way!

A little about me, I have been teaching for twelve years. My favorite area to teach is writing. We will be reading, writing, adding, subtracting and much much more! I love what I do, and I am so excited to get to know your child!

The most important thing I want your child to know about second grade is to always try their best! I look forward to being your child’s teacher this year. Email will always be the best way to contact me, feel free to reach out to me at jshirley@gpsd.us any time!

    Thanks,

  • TIPS FOR MRS. SHIRLEY'S SECOND GRADE CLASS

    1. Lunch Account  -     You can send money daily, weekly, or monthly or you can logon to your child's lunch account through our district webpage and pay online. If you are paying by check (please make the check out to: Glassboro Lunch Account). PLEASE SEND CASH OR CHECK IN AN ENVELOPE OR BAGGY WITH YOUR CHILD'S NAME ON IT AND PLACE IT IN THEIR FOLDER.
    2. Student Number -    Each student in my class has a number. (You will see this next to your child's name.) This is our class in alphabetical order by last name. I use these numbers often in class for quick filing etc…
    3. Home Folder -    Each student will have a daily take-home folder. This folder is where anything that I need to see should be (doctor’s notes, homework, lunch money etc…). The students will place these folders in a basket every morning for me to go through. Please be sure to empty this folder each night.
    4. ** Homework-     Homework will be sent home Monday through Thursday.  Each student will have a student planner where they will write their assignment for the day.  This planner will need to come to school each day and be initialed by a parent each night.  Students' behaviors will also be recorded in this book.  Your child is expected to read for 10-15 minutes each night.
    5. Please be sure to put your child's first and last name on jackets, lunch boxes, umbrellas, bags, gloves, hat, etc…
    6. Our classroom is #A-12. The phone number is 856-625-2700, Ext. is 8415. My  e-mail address is jshirley@gpsd.us.
    7. WATER BOTTLES:   Students are encouraged to bring in a water bottle to keep on their bookbag during the day.  (This helps prevent spills and please ONLY water in them, NO juice or soda.)

I am looking forward to a great school year. I will need your help at home. Please read to or with your child as often as possible. Help or check your child's homework. Look at your child's work that he or she brings home and practice what we do in class.

Together we will have a successful year!

    Dear Families,

I am anxious to share in the celebration of your child’s birthday!  I invite you to participate in the “Birthday Book Program” where your child “TREATS” the classroom to a book on his/her birthday.  Please purchase a new picture book or choose a gently used one from home, wrap it and send it to school with your child on his/her birthday.

I will read the book to the class and then it goes into our classroom library for everyone to enjoy.  On the inside cover will be a picture of your child holding his/her book. (I will take the picture) and the date of his/her birthday. (Summer birthdays will be celebrated in the spring).

This is a wonderful way to promote reading as we celebrate our birthdays!  The books in the Birthday Book Basket are available for everyone to read this year and in the following years.

I have found the birthday books to be some of the most popular reading books during reading time.  The children love to share the books and are so excited to see their pictures inside the cover.

Birthdays are a very exciting part of your child’s life and so is the gift of reading.  Please keep in mind that a treat is gone within minutes, while a book lasts a lifetime!!

P.S.  School book orders are a great place to get good books for reasonable prices.  The birthday book can be a hardcover or a softcover.

    Thank you!

    Mrs. Shirley
