About the Superintendent
Dr. Mark Silverstein became the Glassboro School District superintendent in July 2009. With his vision of data-driven instruction, Silverstein has enhanced education in the Glassboro Public School District while maintaining conservative spending practices. Under Silverstein, the school district has consistently involved the community in the Strategic Planning Process.
During his tenure, he has created greater opportunities for South Jersey students by introducing school choice through the Fine & Performing Arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Academies. The STEM Academy includes a Biomed.Track. Academy members, including school choice students as well as those who reside in Glassboro, receive advanced instruction and attend Rowan University classes during their junior and senior years of high school. A new Business Academy is expected to be offered in September 2022. The superintendent sits on the Board of Directors for the NJ Inter-District Public School Choice Association.
He has also overseen the implementation of a Professional Development School (PDS) partnership with Rowan University. The PDS partnership provides quality professional development opportunities for staff and additional support for students.
In 2017, Silverstein was a recipient of the Kitchen of Hope Community Service and Leadership Award. He is an active member of the Glassboro Rotary. He is a Master Mason with the NJ Masonic Lodge – Rising Sun Lodge No. 15 and a member of the Parvin State Park Appreciation Committee. He is a current mentor of administrative candidates throughout South Jersey.
Silverstein serves as an adjunct professor for Rowan and Fairleigh Dickinson Universities’ Graduate Schools of Education and formerly served as an adjunct professor at Rutgers University, Undergraduate School of Business.
Prior to coming to Glassboro, Silverstein was the superintendent of the Hainesport Township School District in Burlington County. He also previously served as principal of Bridgeton Middle School, assistant principal of Carusi Middle School in Cherry Hill, and vice principal of Salem High/Middle School. Silverstein holds Doctor and Master of Education degrees from Widener University and both an MBA and BA degree from Rutgers University.
Silverstein resides in South Jersey with his wife, Lynn, who is executive director of the Gloucester County Bar Association.
