NCAA Eligibility Standards for FreshmanIn order for a student to be eligible to recieve an offer of an athletic scholarship they must have the required number of core courses. If a student does not have the required number of core courses (16), colleges can not even offer the student a scholarship regardless of how athletically talented they may be. Make sure your child is communicating with their guidance counselor, to ensure that they are taking NCAA approved core courses.2008 GraduatesDivision I athletes16 Core Courses: 4 years of English, 3 years of math, 2 years of natural/physical science, 1 year of additional english, math or natural/physical science, 2years of social science and 4 years of additional courses from any area listed above, foreign language or religion/philosophy.Division II athletes14 Core Courses: 4 years of English, 2 years of math, 2 years of natural/physical science, 1 year of additional english or natural/physical science, 2 years of social science and 3 years of additional courses from any area listed above, foreign language or nondoctrinal religion/philosophy.
