    NCAA Eligibility Standards for Freshman

In order for a student to be eligible to recieve an offer of an athletic scholarship they must have the required number of core courses.  If a student does not have the required number of core courses (16), colleges can not even offer the student a scholarship regardless of how athletically talented they may be.  Make sure your child is communicating with their guidance counselor, to ensure that they are taking NCAA approved core courses.
