Advanced Placement Biology
Welcome to AP Bio. AP Bio should be viewed as a two semester college biology course for biology majors. Students utilize a college text, the course proceeds at a college pace, students participate in inquiry based labs and take college level tests. The course of study will be based on the AP Biology Curriculum Framework set by the College Board and students will be strongly encouraged to sit for the AP exam in May. Again, welcome, and I look forward to helping you navigate your way through AP Bio.Course Overview
The goals of the program are based on the underlying principles of the Big Ideas of Biology as outlined in the Curriculum Framework to build students’ conceptual understanding:
Big Idea 1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.
Big Idea 2: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce and to maintain dynamic homeostasis.
Big Idea 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit and respond to information essential to life processes.Units are designed to explore the Big Ideas through the supporting Enduring Understandings and Essential Knowledge statements as well as the connections between them. The key to success in AP Biology is for the student to be actively engaged in his/her own learning process.
